Apparently, it paired well with the steak Baker had delivered from 
Morton's.
（明らかに、ベーカー元国務長官がモートンステーキから運んできたステーキ
に合うようにです。）

pair well withは「～と同等となるようにする」の意味ですが、ジョークで、
「こっそり持ってきたステーキにはウォッカが一番でしょう」と話しています。

◇　   brushes with death

For Dad’s part, I think those brushes with death made him cherish the 
gift of life, and he vowed to live every day to the fullest.
（父にとって、その時の死を意識したことが、その後の人生を大切にすること
になり、精一杯生きることを誓ったのです。）

brush with deathとは「死にそうになること」です。

（父は、失敗は人生に付き物だと受け入れたのです。しかし、失敗により、自

be defined byは「～に定義づけられる」の意味ですが、意味合いとしては、上
記訳のようになります。
